This Visual Art course is designed to build upon the foundation concepts and skills learned at the Grade 8 level. Students taking this course as a first art course will be given the opportunity to learn the course material as new concepts. The learning focus of this course is to teach problem solving and critical thinking skills at a more advanced level in the visual arts domain. Students will expand their knowledge of the Elements of Design ( line, tone, colour, texture, shape, space) and the Principles of Design (balance, contrast, emphasis, movement/rhythm, harmony). Students will also explore and become competent with image development strategies. Students will learn and use correctly a variety of art processes and accompanying art vocabulary. Emphasis is on students gaining visual awareness of the world around them, developing personal original imagery, understanding the historical context of art making, and responding critically to their own work, the work of their peers and the artwork of others. Students will participate in individual project work, cooperative learning and peer tutoring in at least five of the following visual expression areas.
